Native Australian Animals

These native Australian animals can be categorized into mammals, marsupials, monotremes, birds, reptiles, and marine animals.

Native Australian Mammals

Kookaburra

Native mammals include dingoes, wild dogs, numbats, quolls, and Tasmanian devils. Dingoes are the largest carnivorous mammals that populate the wilds of mainland Australia. But the smaller numbats and Tasmanian devils, house cat-like, can be seen only in wildlife parks. You can also spot native Australian animals in the wilds of Tasmania. The critically endangered quolls are hard to find in the wilds. But with little luck, you can spot them in the rainforests of south-eastern Australia.

Unique Australian Wildlife: The Marsupials

Koalas

The marsupials, or pouched animals, have been inhabiting Australia for thousands of years. There are over 140 species of marsupials in the region. They include kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and wombats. Kangaroos and wallabies alone have 55 different native species. These species vary in size and weight. The native koalas have been the favourite of the marsupials. Tourists worldwide travel to Victoria just to see the lazy but cuddly koalas. The stout wombats are also pretty common. Victoria is the place to spot Australian wildlife in nature.

Hard To Find Australian Wildlife: Elusive Monotremes

Monotremes are egg-laying mammals that you cannot find in any other places in the world except in Australia. The platypus, which is the most elusive mammal species in the world, lives along waterways and lakes. It has a bill like a duck’s and a furry waterproofed body with webbed feet. They dig burrows in riverbanks. Echidnas are spiny anteaters with a coat like a porcupine’s. You can spot these monotremes in the wilds of Southern Australia, particularly in Kangaroo Island.

Native Australian Wild Birdlife

Australia is also home to over 800 native wild birds, ranging from tiny honeyeaters to giant emus. Emus graze in the wilds, woodlands, and grasslands; cassowaries are a common sight in tropical rainforests. Kookaburras live in open woodlands, and lyrebirds sing their beautiful tunes in the wilds of southeast Queensland. Little penguins are the most famous on Phillip Island. The island is also the natural habitat of the endemic flying foxes. Parrots abound in Australia, of which there are 55 species of them live in the wild. The woodlands have several varieties of cockatoos, rosellas, lorikeets, cockatiels, parakeets, and budgerigars. They can also be found in rural and urban areas.

Native Australian Reptiles

Native Australian Reptiles

Australia records to have the most number of venous snakes, 21 of the world’s 25. Two species of freshwater crocodile and estuarine or saltwater crocodile can be found only in the region. Six out of the seven species of marine turtles can be found in Australia. They are the flatback turtle, green turtle, hawksbill turtle, leatherback turtle, loggerhead turtle and olive ridley turtle. Australia also hosts native lizards, dragons, goannas, and thorny devils.
