The Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT) is a real treat for hikers, immersing you in the rugged landscape and ancient culture of the Grampians National Park. 160km of trail takes you through mountains, rocky ridges and views, so you can really connect with nature. The trail is for all levels of hikers, from beginners to seasoned trekkers, and it has day walks, overnight stays, and multi-day adventures. Beyond the natural beauty, the GPT is an opportunity to engage with the land’s rich Aboriginal culture and to pay respects to the Djab Wurrung Traditional Owners and the Gariwerd Aboriginal people who have lived here for thousands of years.
A Multi-Day Adventure
The Grampians Peaks Trail is a world-class hiking route in the heart of Victoria’s Grampians National Park, also known as Gariwerd. Opened in late 2021, it’s quickly become one of Australia’s most spectacular long-distance hikes. From Mount Zero in the Northern Grampians to Dunkeld in the South, the GPT takes you through many different landscapes, rugged cliffs, rocky outcrops, mountain peaks and peaceful woodlands.
A feature of the trail is its sustainable infrastructure, 11 hike-in campgrounds with tent platforms, timber platforms and rainwater tanks to support hikers. The GPT also prioritises cultural and environmental preservation, so you can walk on ancient rocks, Aboriginal cultural landscapes and incredible biodiversity.
The trail is broken into sections so you can customise your experience to suit your fitness level, schedule and hiking style. Whether you want a day trip with a short day walk or a sense of remoteness on a multi day trek, the GPT has it all.
Peaks Trail Highlights
The Grampians Peaks Trail has some of Victoria’s most impressive natural features. Check out:
- Mount Zero: A great place to start your hike with views of the surrounding plains.
- Mount William: The highest peak in the Grampians with views of the mountain range.
- Mount Rosea: Rocky ridgelines and views for miles.
- Redman Bluff: A tough but rewarding hike with peaks and wow.
- Mount Abrupt: In the southern sections, this peak has views and cultural landscapes to explore.
- Signal Peak: A secret gem that’s an adventure.
The trail passes through the lands of the Djab Wurrung and Gariwerd Aboriginal people. Hike ancient rock art sites, learn about traditional ways and connect with the spirituality of this land. The stories of the Traditional Owners are embedded in the trail, so it’s not just a physical journey. It’s a cultural and spiritual one.

Best Hiking Seasons
The best time to hike the Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT) is spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May). These periods have mild weather, making it more comfortable for multi-day hikes. In spring, the park comes alive with wildflowers, and the trail is a riot of colour. Autumn is equally beautiful, with crisp air and golden landscapes. Avoid hiking in the height of summer as temperatures can get extreme and lead to dehydration and heat exhaustion. Also, during dry periods, the water tanks along the trail may not be as reliable, so it’s harder to stay hydrated.
Winter is also an option for experienced hikers as the cooler weather makes the uphill climbs easier. However wet weather during this time can make the rocky sections slippery so proper preparation and caution is required.
How to Get There
What to Bring
Make sure to pack the right gear for a successful hike. Bring:
- Sturdy hiking boots for rock scrambles and ridgelines.
- Rain gear.
- Food for multi-day hikes.
- Town water and a water bottle.
Gear Hire
If you don’t have all the gear you need for your hike don’t worry. Several businesses near Halls Gap and other entry points to the GPT offer gear hire so you can rent the gear without the upfront cost of buying.
Some providers also offer hiking poles, sleeping mats and specialized clothing like thermal layers or wet weather gear. Gear hire not only saves you money but also ensures you have good quality and well maintained gear for your adventure.
Check out the rental options and book in advance, especially during peak season as demand is high.
