The Anangu people have long referred to the towering sandstone monolith as “Uluru” for generations. The name Ayers Rock was only given by explorer William Gosse in 1873, after he discovered this towering rock. The name was a salute to then-South Australia’s Chief Secretary, Sir Henry Ayers. In 1993, the Australian government made a historic move by officially recognizing Uluru as another official name for Ayers Rock. Thus, it became Ayers Rock/Uluru.

By Road

Visiting Uluru National Park – Kata Tjuta by car is a great way to explore the area. The journey from Darwin to the park border is a 17-hour drive, while from Adelaide it is 18 hours. If you are coming from Adelaide, you will be pleased by the drive as the is well-maintained and runs through the famous underground town of Coober Pedy. It’s also worth noting that cars rented in Alice Springs may have limited free mileage, and cars rented outside of the Northern Territory may not be permitted in the park. It is best to call ahead to familiarise yourself with the rules.

Can you do a day trip to Uluru from Alice Springs?
