2 day great ocean road and grampians tour customer review

Danielle Konetski

Travelled in September 2019

Before visiting Melbourne, all my friends back home said I had to see the Great Ocean Road.  As an avid hiker, I knew I wanted to check out the highly lauded Grampians National Park and get a feel for local wildlife, so finding the Wildlife Melbourne Tours Australia 2-day tour combining the two felt like it was designed with me in mind.  As my visit coincided with the rainy late-winter season, I knew the chances were high that my trip would be cloudy and wet (and sure enough, it was), but I also knew getting at least a peak of these places would be better than nothing.

The morning of the first day arrived bright and early, and I dutifully loaded myself onto the nearly-full bus. Incredibly, no one had claimed the passenger seat at the front of the bus, and I leaped at the opportunity. Seriously people, if you get the chance, take it!  The views are expansive out the front window! And off we went from the city.

While Melbourne had been drizzly and grey, the bright jewel tones of the ocean seemed to repel the clouds, and it nearly glowed from within. Despite the low surf that morning, our morning stop found determined surfers, and the swells offered up a good show while we sipped tea and nibbled on biscuits. Back on the bus, we hugged the coast as our delightfully enthusiastic tour guide, Fraser, fed us facts on local wildlife and the history of the area.

Near mid-day, we stopped to track down glimpses of wild koalas which hide amongst the highest eucalyptus branches. These sleepy fuzz balls were hard to spot but gathered clumps of tourists at the base of a tree offered sure-fire ways to locate a few, and the area offered entertaining photos with particularly bold parrots and cockatoos.

Lunchtime was free in a town boasting some of the best gelatos.  While the award-winning lemon custard flavor was the obvious choice for a full scoop, one shouldn’t resist trying the Vegemite flavor.  Don’t worry. It doesn’t taste much more than a very salty caramel, but afterward, you can impress your friends with your daring palate.

Following a very wet but awe-inspiring jaunt in a tree-fern-filled valley (sadly, no carnivorous snails were spotted), we pushed on to the Twelve Apostles.  This iconic spot prompted plenty of involuntary “whoa”s and “wow”s from each onlooker as the sapphire blue and sparkling white water pummeled the golden sandstone pillars, and the wind whipped the waves into a frenzy.  But to be honest, the hordes of fellow tourists and the nearly Deja Vu – inducing effect of such a heavily photographed location made the stop a little lacklustre. The true highlights of the day were the next two stops and the final two of our GOR (Great Ocean Road) tour.  First, stopping at the shipwreck beach with enough time to walk out along the point above and stand at the wave’s edge below, preceded by Fraser’s re-telling of the shipwreck story itself, was a transporting experience as you reflected on those lost in that fateful storm.  The second and most spectacular was the Bay of Martyrs. We saw larger and equally beautiful sandstone formations pummeled by the waves but with the perfect timing of sunset and the priceless luxury of a deserted beach.

As the day drew to a close, we stopped into a small town to purchase dinner from one of a few restaurants. Then it was back on the bus to go the rest of the way to Hall’s Gap in Grampians National Park.  Darkness had fallen by this point, and eyes were either inspecting the backs of eyelids or trained on the road, searching for any kangaroos straying too close.

Morning dawned with the sun wrapped in a thick blanket of rain clouds, and everyone chatted amiably over breakfast.  Bags loaded back into the trailer, and we set off for another day. Nearby, we made our first stop at a small field, which hosted a large mob of kangaroos (yes, that is the collective noun for them).  Sure enough, we rounded the bend to find dozens of kangaroos hopping on all fours in that inch-worm way of theirs, quietly grazing on the grass. Upon closer inspection, we spotted joeys with their heads and arms dangling out of pouches, trying to imitate mom as they reached tentatively toward the grass below.

Moving onward and upward, we climbed our way into the clouds. Our stops were sparing in their views of the valleys but walking through the eucalyptus with rock ledges dropping away to bottomless depths, and tree branches stretching out of sight lent a magical air to the day.  The low, grey ceiling and steady drizzle afforded our quick walk through the Grand Canyon of the Grampians a certain Mordor-Esque atmosphere, and MacKenzie falls could only benefit from the extra water. To be honest, as we rode the bus back down through the low-lying clouds, I felt a bit grateful for the weather.  As a hiker prone to sometimes choose brutal treks for a single view, the necessity to bypass some of the more iconic-yet-strenuous treks may have left me a bit disappointed to have come so close and yet remained so far from some of the more expansive viewpoints of the park. But with the presence of the cool rain, the short hikes with new friends and leaps back into the warm truck were welcome and even a bit cozy.

At the end of the long, steady drive back east, as Frank Sinatra’s “I Did it My Way” blasted through the speakers and the city suddenly spread out in front of us, I couldn’t imagine a better way to experience two iconic regions of Victoria.

Thank you to Wildlife Tours Australia for putting together this tour option, and thank you to Fraser, our awesomely energetic, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic guide.

Ash was the perfect guide to our 2-day tour of The Great Ocean Road in February 2019. He was knowledgeable, friendly and good fun. He knew where the best places were to see the koalas and kangaroos and we saw them! The road trip itself was amazing! Looking over the beautiful turquoise ocean from the coach, seeing the waves crashing over the rocks was and rolling onto the sandy shores was truly wonderful. The Mackenzie Falls were a sight to behold too although the steps on the way back up to the coach tested our stamina! The whole two days were wonderful and we would strongly recommend this tour. Thank you Ash for a great time.

  2. What a wonderful two days with Wildlife Tours. Highly recommend this Grampians 2 day tour with the great ocean road. Thank you.

  3. We were lucky to book the trip with Wildlife Tours led by Darren – very intelligent, knowledgeable and very organized guide. We were like 16 people 2 days tour from Melbourne to Adelaide – felt it was good to cover all without rush. One night you stay in hostel which was clean but you share with 3 or 5 more people. I would definitely recommend this trip. Bayan & Thor

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip from Melbourne around the Great Ocean Road and through the Grampians. Our driver and tour guide Kelly was very informative and helpful and would recommend this tour to anyone visiting. Peter & Brenda

  5. I did the two day Great Ocean Road and Grampians tour on a friend’s recommendation and I’m so glad I did! Our tour guide (Henning) was FANTASTIC – really knowledgable as well as friendly and personable. Each stop on the tour was beautiful and well worth the time – the views were incredible and even got to see some wild roos!

  6. I did the two day tour, first day you see all the highlights of the Great Ocean Road and the second you visit the Grampians. We had an amazing hike there, which included climbing up on our hands and knees and crawling through a cave. And the view was so worth the climb. The tour guides who work for Wildlife are really good as well. They’ll tell you background stories/ history of the places you’ll visit, which gives everything a bigger meaning. You don’t know that extra information, if you do the Great Ocean Road or the Grampians by yourself.

  7. On a crisp and beautiful Thursday morning we headed towards the Great Ocean Road and Grampians 2 day tour with Wildlife. Our tour guide David wasn’t only a walking encyclopedia with a humorous twist, but also a master of time. The amount of places, views and wildlife we saw, and the stories we heard was incredible. There was no feeling of rush and we managed to miss the crowds each time! In addition to Great Ocean Road, we visited the astonishing Otway’s rainforest, watched the sunrise in the Grampians, saw koalas, kengurus and cookabarras in their natural habitat, enjoyed the vibe of cute little beach towns and even went for a wine tasting on our way back. I wholeheartedly recommend this adventure!

I went on the 2 day Great Ocean Road and Grampians Tour with Wildlife Tours Australia and absolutely loved it. The tour guide, Kelly, was the best tour guide I’ve ever had – he was personable, incredibly informative, and kept us on a great schedule to maximize the amount of things our group got to see. Our group had 18 people in it and everyone had a fun time. I highly recommend this tour!

  9. Hi! I was on the 2-day trip with Tim to Great Ocean Road and Grampians.

I stayed at the Grampians Motel and it was GREAT… very clean, nicely appointed and had everything I needed. The bed was very comfortable.

I also want to apologize to Tim for rushing off without thanking him and saying goodbye. He was a terrific guide… very knowledgeable and concerned for our comfort. I LOVED how he used music to introduce a new story or area of interest. He learned our names and nationalities quickly and truly set a tone of congeniality. He also helped me with a couple technology issues with my phone, for which I am VERY grateful!

    I thoroughly enjoyed the trip

  10. Highly recommended!! It was such a great weekend on the Great ocean road and the Grampians. Our tour guide Craig was so knowledgeable, he knew everything and tried to show us as much as possible!! We were just 8 people so very lucky… The accommodation for the night was very good, clean and comfortable. I also got picked up and dropped of near my hostel, so don’t worry about it. This weekend couldn’t have been better!

  11. This tour was fantastic. I had Tim as my guide, and he made the entire experience unforgettable with his stories about each location as well as his wonderful song choices!
