The Penguin Parade
Phillip Island is a natural wonderland filled with adventure. It truly is a nature lover’s dream – spectacular coastal scenery, lush forests, and native wildlife. One of the most popular activities to do on the island is to watch the Penguin Parade at dusk. Every day at sunset, the Little Penguins will return ashore to their nesting burrows to rest at night. The penguins spend most of their time at sea swimming and fishing. Our guided Phillip Island tours let you experience this amazing moment of the penguins coming ashore.
The island has been home to these penguins for thousands of years. For more than 90 years, people have been travelling to the island to watch the show unfold. This started all the way back in the 1920s when the island residents Bern Denham, Bert West and Bert Watchorn took tourists to the Summerland Beach to view the penguins’ nightly arrival. It wasn’t until 1940s that the number of visitors skyrocketed. In 1939, a bridge connecting the mainland to the island was built. Also at this point, people began to build houses around the beach.
Phillip Island had garnered a lot of popularity very quickly. People would go there to have beach picnics and they would also bring their dogs along to the beaches. This however harmed the penguins’ habitat and sand dune burrows. Unfortunately, many Little Penguins were killed and thus, there was a massive decline in the seabird population. As a result, fences and viewing stands were built to control the public view and access to the beaches and Little Penguins.
