How Was London Bridge on The Great Ocean Road Formed?
London Bridge on the Great Ocean Road formed by the gradual erosion of the shoreline’s soft limestone due to the extreme weather conditions of the Southern Ocean, the collapse of the impressive rock formation was also a natural process. Today, London Arch has become a popular tourist attraction. When it fell down in 1990, two tourists were stranded on the outer span of the bridge until a police helicopter came to the rescue. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident.
What remained of London Bridge after it caved in was an arch. Before its collapse, people could cross the naturally carved bridge connecting the eastern bridge and the mainland. London Arch of which it’s now named is one of the rock formations collectively called the 12 Apostles.
Over thousands of years, the landscape of the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road has been continually reshaped. Nature has it constantly changing. And London Bridge is proof of such a process. One of the nine limestone stacks also dramatically collapsed in 2005.
