The Hills History

The history of Warramate Hills goes back thousands of years and is deeply connected to the Indigenous Wurundjeri people, who are the traditional custodians of this land. The Wurundjeri people had a deep connection to the land. They respected it and used it sustainably. This connection is still visible today. Many areas of the hills still have the natural landscape the Wurundjeri people used to live off. It wasn’t just about food but also spiritual and cultural significance, reflected in their practices and oral traditions passed down through generations.

When European settlers arrived in the 19th century, they were attracted to the area because of its rich soils and agricultural potential. Initially, they focused on livestock and general farming but soon realised Warramate Hills had the perfect climate and conditions for viticulture. The cool climate and well-drained soils of the hills were ideal for growing grapes, which would later become the foundation for the vineyards. By the late 19th and early 20th century, viticulture became the hallmark of the region, and Warramate Hills started to get a reputation for producing top-quality wines.
