Victor Harbor is a favoured destination, suitable for short-day excursions from Adelaide or more extended stays. To ensure an exceptional trip, here’s a list of the top activities in Victor Harbor.
For many Adelaide inhabitants, Victor Harbor is a cherished spot, frequented for day visits or weekend retreats. It serves as a summer vacation hub and has evolved into a picturesque beachside community. While it’s the summer favourite, it also offers a serene winter experience.

The Encounter Coast Discovery Centre
The Encounter Coast Discovery Centre, established by the National Trust, is a museum showcasing a diverse collection that spans Aboriginal artefacts, the history of whaling, trading centres, and railways. While visiting, don’t miss the nearby Customs House, furnished to reflect the early 1900s, and take a moment to explore Victor Harbor’s first public toilet.
The South Australian Whale Centre
Situated conveniently on the foreshore at the heart of the town, the South Australian Whale Centre provides insightful knowledge about the local whale population. It also features exhibits on ocean sustainability and a model of the “MY Steve Irwin”. Ideal for families, the centre offers numerous interactive activities for children.

The Cockle Train
Part of the Steamranger Heritage Railway, the Cockle Train travels between Victor Harbor and Goolwa, making stops at Middleton and Port Elliott. Predominantly steam-powered, occasionally diesel engines are utilized due to fire hazards or other commitments. The train features vintage heritage carriages, offering a nostalgic journey complemented by captivating coastal scenery. For schedules and other Steamranger trips, visit the website. Tickets can be purchased on the day at the stations without advance booking.
Explore the Encounter Bikeway
The Encounter Bikeway gracefully stretches along the coastline of Encounter Bay, seamlessly connecting Goolwa, Middleton, Port Elliott, and Victor Harbor. This path offers an excellent opportunity for cycling (or walking) while visiting Victor Harbor. You can either indulge in a full-day adventure by covering the entire 31km or simply relish a portion of the route.
For renting bicycles in Victor Harbor, consider Spinway Bike Hire for automated services or consult Surf & Sun in Middleton. For electric bikes (as well as traditional ones), reach out to Bicycles Victor Harbor.

Experience Quad Biking at Waitpinga
A couple of years back, I had the chance to engage in this exhilarating activity, and it was remarkable. Following a brief tutorial on operating quad bikes, we embarked on a journey around the farm, acquainting ourselves with the local flora, fauna, and history.
Throughout the adventure, we were captivated by the breathtaking views of the Southern Ocean.
On our return, we had some time to “play” and test our riding skills on a sandy track winding through the scrub. Although ideal for thrill-seekers, I can attest that it is accessible for novices as well.
Dine at the Renowned Port Elliott Bakery
Almost every time you traverse the main street in Port Elliott, you’ll notice a queue outside the Port Elliott Bakery, reputed to be South Australia’s finest.
Housed in a modest structure that has functioned as a bakery since the 1860s, the current proprietors have been at the helm for over three decades.
The bakery is packed with a variety of delicious savoury pastries, such as an exceptional meat pie and an assortment of sweets, including unique “Donut of the Month” offerings. Vegan and gluten-free options are also available.
Located just 8km from Victor Harbor’s centre, a trip to this bakery is necessary when engaging in Victor Harbor activities.

Experience Axe Throwing
Venture to Chop It Axe Throwing and test your arm’s prowess! In recent times, axe throwing has emerged as a trendy leisure activity. Initially a competitive element in lumberjack contests, it has become an entertaining recreation accessible to all.
Participants hurl axes at designated targets, aiming for the bullseye to accumulate points. The activity demands skill, precision, and concentration, making it an engaging and challenging pursuit for individuals or groups.
Participate in a Walking Tour
Victor Harbor Walking Tours recently introduced two distinct tours around the town. The Discover Victor Harbor Guided Walking Tour encompasses all the prominent sights in the vicinity.
This 90-minute stroll through the town centre provides insights into Victor Harbor’s history and its evolution into one of South Australia’s preferred coastal cities.
The second option is the Stories of Shipwrecks & Settlers Walking Tour. This 75-minute excursion delves into Victor Harbor’s maritime past.

Embark on a Hike to The Bluff
Having indulged at the bakery, it’s time to burn off some calories (perhaps to make room for more treats!) and the premier hike in Victor Harbor is ascending The Bluff.
This notable landmark is easily identifiable from Victor Harbor’s beachfront – the prominent hill situated on a headland west of the town centre.
The trail leading to The Bluff’s summit is known as the Rosetta Circuit. This 800m loop commences at the car park and takes approximately an hour to complete. Once at the summit, revel in panoramic views spanning the ocean and countryside.
For enthusiasts seeking longer trails, the Heysen Trail is proximal to Victor Harbor, and a segment through Deep Creek Conservation Park makes for an excellent day hike.
Experience Surfing
Victor Harbor’s surrounding beaches are renowned for offering some of South Australia’s premier surfing experiences close to Adelaide. Locals frequently make day trips here specifically for surfing.
For those new to surfing, lessons are available, allowing you to master the art of “Hanging Ten.” Most surf lessons take place in Middleton, situated about 11km from Victor Harbor.

Observe the Little Penguins
Granite Island hosts a diminutive colony of Little Penguins. Observing them during daylight is unlikely; however, evening tours are available to understand the challenges faced by these penguins.
A devastating fox attack in 2020 left only approximately 20 Little Penguins on Granite Island. Tours were temporarily suspended to give the penguins time to recuperate.
Explore Granite Island
Granite Island is among Victor Harbor’s prime attractions. You can walk across the Causeway or opt for the horse-drawn tram and spend a few hours exploring Granite Island.
The entire island constitutes the Granite Island Recreation Park, accessible daily, except on days of catastrophic fire danger.
Ascend to the island’s peak to marvel at the contrasting oceanic scenes. The powerful waves on the far side of the island sharply contrast with the calmer seas near Victor Harbor.
Complete a circuit of the island along the Kaiki Trail and enjoy lunch or a snack at the Island Cafe before returning to Victor Harbor.

Explore Coral Street Art Space
Nestled in the heart of Victor Harbor, Coral Street Art Space is a cozy gallery inviting visitors to explore its latest exhibits. The displays often feature works from local and regional artists, including a beautiful collection of indigenous art.
Visiting the gallery’s store allows you to discover unique homewares, jewellery, or artworks that could make perfect gifts or personal keepsakes.
Experience the Horse Drawn Tram
Victor Harbor’s Horse Drawn Tram, which ferries visitors across the Granite Island causeway, stands as a town symbol. The inaugural tram journey across the Victor Harbor tramway occurred in 1894.
Although a motorized version of the tram was introduced in the intervening years, the beloved horse-drawn tram came back in 1986.
Departing from the end of the Causeway, the tram usually operates approximately every 45 minutes, starting from 10:30 am and concluding at 3:20 pm.
For updates on timings and availability, especially considering weather changes, it’s advisable to check their Facebook page.

Embark on a Scenic Biplane Flight
About half an hour from Victor Harbor is Aldinga Airfield, where you can embark on a scenic flight over the picturesque McLaren Vale region and the southern beaches.
Several historic aircraft, including a Tiger Moth, will take you aloft. For an adrenaline boost, consider incorporating aerobatics into your flight.
Discover Adjacent Towns
A variety of engaging activities can be found in the vicinity of Victor Harbor. By embarking on the Cockle Train, participating in surfing lessons, or visiting the Port Elliot Bakery, you’re already venturing into nearby towns.
Port Elliott, Middleton, and Goolwa are conveniently close and are wonderful towns to explore.
Port Elliott, apart from its well-known bakery, is home to a beautiful crescent beach named Horseshoe Bay, which remains picturesque regardless of the weather. The beachfront restaurant, The Flying Fish, is an ideal location for a leisurely lunch.
Middleton is celebrated for its surf, and it’s a splendid spot for a swim even if you aren’t taking a surfing lesson. It also features charming accommodations, such as the Middleton Beach Huts.
Goolwa, located by Lake Alexandria near the mouth of the Murray, was historically a vibrant river port. Presently, the Goolwa Animal Farm is popular among children, while adults can explore historical museums and the Steam Exchange Brewery situated on the wharf. In 2023, the PS Oscar W paddle boat cruises are on hold due to repairs but are anticipated to resume shortly.

Delight in Urimbirra Wildlife Park
Urimbirra Wildlife Park is a fantastic smaller park, housing a wide selection of native Australian species and some beloved farmyard animals. The park is expansive, providing visitors with ample space to wander and enjoy the animals, making it a perfect activity for families.
During your visit, you can hand-feed kangaroos and attend koala talks, followed by an opportunity to enter the enclosure and pat the koalas.
Stroll the Town Centre Heritage Trail
Embarking on the Town Centre Heritage Trail is a splendid method to familiarize oneself with Victor Harbor. The town has highlighted 38 historical structures pivotal to its evolution and has curated an accessible 3km walk to view them all.
Be attentive to the plaques adorning the buildings as they elucidate the history and importance of each structure. To assist your journey, procure a map from the Visitor Information Centre or download it from their website. Remember to include this trail when seeking complimentary activities in Victor Harbor.
Embark on Big Duck Boat Tours
Board the Big Duck and set sail on a tour exploring Encounter Bay’s coastline and fauna. Guests frequently spot dolphins, seals, sea lions, and, during winter, whales.
Two distinct tours depart from The Causeway:
The 90-minute Southern Ocean Adventure
The 45-minute Seal Island Boat Tour

Engage in Fishing
Numerous spots around Victor Harbor invite you to cast a line and possibly reel in your evening meal! With its predominantly tranquil, sheltered waters, it’s an ideal locale for family-friendly fishing excursions.
Whether you choose the beach or a jetty, you might soon find yourself narrating tales of the elusive catch that slipped away!
Experience Softfoot Farm Tours
A visit to Softfoot Farm in Hindmarsh Valley, located approximately 15 minutes from Victor Harbor, offers a tour of this alpaca farm. Navigate around the farm on an ATV and learn about these endearing animals, even having the opportunity to feed them by hand.
A secondary nighttime tour provides a unique chance to observe nocturnal Australian native animals. Additional details can be found on their website.
Following the tour, enjoy a meal at the onsite gourmet restaurant, The Swagman Chargrill, known for its locally sourced slow food.

Discover Deals at the Markets
When in Victor Harbor over the weekend, be on the lookout for local markets where you can snag a bargain or relish some delectable local produce. At least three distinct markets operate consistently year-round.
Victor Harbor Beachside Markets: Occurring on the 2nd & 4th Sundays monthly, with a shift to every Sunday in January.
Victor Harbor Farmers Market: Held every Saturday morning.
Victor Harbor Country Markets: Scheduled for the 2nd & 4th Sundays each month, extending to every Sunday in January.
Kayaking Adventure in the Coorong
A bit further from Victor Harbor, a day of kayaking in the Coorong offers a wonderful experience! I had the privilege of engaging in this activity over the summer.
It was an insightful way to immerse oneself in the area’s natural environment, savour some of the indigenous bush tucker, and witness the famous mouth of the Murray River.
The tours commence from Hindmarsh Island, roughly a 30-minute drive from Victor Harbor.

Enjoy Films at Victa Cinemas
Bask in the Beach Ambiance
I almost neglected to mention the most apparent Victor Harbor pursuit – beach time! The beach in Victor Harbor is more protected than neighbouring ones, with Granite Island acting as a barrier against some waves.
The beach’s shallowness is favourable for young kids or swimmers who might be less assured. In the hotter months, it becomes an ideal locale for cooling down.

Lodging Options in Victor Harbor
On our visit, we lodged at The Buff Resort Apartments. These apartments are a fantastic choice for those desiring a kitchen facility and are especially suitable for family stays.
The resort features an on-site pool located directly on the beachfront, offering magnificent views over Victor Harbor. The only potential downside is its slight remoteness from the town centre, but as a car is required for commuting, this shouldn’t be a substantial issue.
Numerous other accommodations are available in Victor Harbor, from backpacker hostels and the Victor Harbor Holiday & Cabin Park to the upscale four-star McCracken Country Club.
