What is Pyramid Rock?

On the southern coast of Victoria, Australia’s Phillip Island has a unique geological feature called pyramid rock. It’s called this because it rises up from the ocean in the shape of a pyramid. Millions of years ago volcanic eruptions formed the rock so it’s jagged and other features like this show how the island was created. As well as being a geological marker Pyramid Rock is a symbol of Phillip Island’s natural beauty.

Getting Here

Getting to Pyramid Rock is easy but does take some time. The rock is 15kms from Cowes which is the main town on Phillip Island. You can get there via Pyramid Rock Road (Pyramid Rock Rd) which has signs to the car park for visitors only. From the car park there is a short path down to the base of Pyramid Rock. Why Visit Pyramid Rock

There are many reasons for any adventurer to visit Pyramid Rock; one will do. The black basalt columns and sandy sediments show how this place was formed during a volcanic period; others weren’t affected by the same, so their structures are different. Lovely coastal views surrounded by cliffs make it a lovely spot to relax and meditate. There are many lookouts, including the Pyramid Rock Lookout, where you can take photos of Pyramid Rock against white or coloured backdrops of Bass Strait.

Walks & Trails

Hikers and nature lovers will love Pyramid Rock. There are many walking tracks of varying degrees of difficulty. For example, you can do the moderate Pyramid Rock Circuit, which has panoramic views of the coastline and the rock itself. If you want a more adventurous walk, then try the clifftop track, which goes past Seal Rocks and has views of the Phillip Island coastline. If you prefer a leisurely stroll, then Berrys Beach Walk is an easy path where you can meander and stop at the many viewing platforms along the way.

The view from Pyramid Rock is stunning. From some angles, you’ll see the rugged coastline of Cape Woolamai and the peaceful Bass Strait waters that make up part of Phillip Island’s coastline. Being higher up gives you an advantage when it comes to taking pics, whether you like black cliff faces or soft sandy beach rocks down by the shoreline.

Wallaby Spotting

Pyramid Rock is also a nature lovers paradise. There are several species of wallabies in the area that can be seen early in the morning and late in the morning. These little critters are the icing on the cake of Pyramid Rock and a bit of wildlife magic at your holiday spot.

Fishing

For all you out there, there are good fishing spots near Pyramid Rock. The rocky outcrops along the coastal areas nearby are a popular spot to catch a variety of fish. From Pyramid Rock’s beach, you can also fish for a quiet day by the sea.
