A Multi-Day Adventure

The Grampians Peaks Trail is a world-class hiking route in the heart of Victoria’s Grampians National Park, also known as Gariwerd. Opened in late 2021, it’s quickly become one of Australia’s most spectacular long-distance hikes. From Mount Zero in the Northern Grampians to Dunkeld in the South, the GPT takes you through many different landscapes, rugged cliffs, rocky outcrops, mountain peaks and peaceful woodlands.
A feature of the trail is its sustainable infrastructure, 11 hike-in campgrounds with tent platforms, timber platforms and rainwater tanks to support hikers. The GPT also prioritises cultural and environmental preservation, so you can walk on ancient rocks, Aboriginal cultural landscapes and incredible biodiversity.
The trail is broken into sections so you can customise your experience to suit your fitness level, schedule and hiking style. Whether you want a day trip with a short day walk or a sense of remoteness on a multi day trek, the GPT has it all.

Best Hiking Seasons

The best time to hike the Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT) is spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May). These periods have mild weather, making it more comfortable for multi-day hikes. In spring, the park comes alive with wildflowers, and the trail is a riot of colour. Autumn is equally beautiful, with crisp air and golden landscapes. Avoid hiking in the height of summer as temperatures can get extreme and lead to dehydration and heat exhaustion. Also, during dry periods, the water tanks along the trail may not be as reliable, so it’s harder to stay hydrated.
Winter is also an option for experienced hikers as the cooler weather makes the uphill climbs easier. However wet weather during this time can make the rocky sections slippery so proper preparation and caution is required.
