History

Puffing Billy is more than just a scenic ride. It’s a piece of living history. The line was built in 1900 to serve the isolated communities in the Dandenong Ranges. The challenging terrain required innovative engineering and the line winds through rainforests over historic trestle bridges and up steep grades. The Belgrave to Gembrook line was the lifeline for the region, transporting timber, farm produce and passengers.

But with the rise of road transport in the mid 20th century the line was closed in 1953. But thanks to the efforts of volunteers and rail enthusiasts Puffing Billy was brought back to life and reopened as a tourist railway in 1962. Today it’s one of the most famous steam railways in the world and a chance to experience the beauty and heritage of Victoria and relive the past.
