The State Coal Mine is a great place to visit, right in the heart of Victoria. It’s an opportunity to see how it all used to be.
History of The State Coal Mine
Victoria has had a coal mining industry for at least 100 years. In 1909, the Victorian Government wanted a reliable source of power for the state, and this mine was established. It was a major player in industrialising this area and the local economy and infrastructure. During its operating years, the State Coal Mine was famous for its large coal deposits and was one of the biggest in the coal market.
The mine was a huge success and produced millions of tons of coal with the expansion of the mine being a major factor in the growth of the local economy. So while it was a coal producing site it was also a social site as working conditions were tough for most of the miners who worked here. There are historic buildings housing equipment and mining memorabilia that show everyday life and hardships of those who worked below ground.
