History and Heritage
Timboon’s history dates back to the early 20th century when it was a logging and farming town. The arrival of the railway really put the town on the map and enabled the transport of goods and people. The name Timboon comes from an Indigenous word meaning ‘a place to fish’ and reflects the deep connection the Eastern Maar & Gunditjmara people have to the land. Today, you can visit historical sites and the Timboon Heritage Trail to learn about the town’s history and the cultural heritage of the original inhabitants. This trail, with restored buildings and interpretive signs, takes you back in time and shows the importance of equity of outcomes and lasting partnerships between the community and Indigenous groups.
